Data breaches show us how much personal data is out there

On the 4th of April, Epsilon – the world’s largest permission-based email marketing provider – announced that hackers had stolen an unknown amount of information from their servers, including the names and email addresses of many thousands of people.

Many consumers in the UK didn’t  look twice at the story when news of the widespread data threat first emerged.

However peoples’ attention has certainly been captured now that more familiar names have become embroiled in the ongoing saga.

Marks & Spencer and Mothercare are the latest companies to announce that their customers’ email addresses have been compromised and are likely to be targeted with personalised phishing scams since the data breach.

Here at ALLOW, we’re sympathetic with members of the public who have lost control over their data.

The problem is not likely to be resolved any time soon and we recommend that anyone who receives emails from the following companies (click here for the list) should be careful not to share personal information unless they are absolutely sure the message is legitimate.

At ALLOW we believe that everyone has the right to know what is happening to their data and which companies have access to it.

Part of our mission is to shed some light on the marketing industry and how that industry uses people’s personal information. The improved handling of consumer data is an essential step towards creating a more trusting relationship.

We want to encourage a mutually beneficial scenario between organisations and individuals where communication is increasingly transparent and where people have more control.

ALLOW offers a service that allows you to contact companies directly about the products you are interested in for the best possible deals – without any further data obligations.

You will only be marketed to for a timeframe of your choosing – so if you’re interested in buying a new TV in the next two weeks and you’ve got a brand in mind, you can let us know and we’ll make sure that you receive the best deals directly from the company of your choice. After a fortnight is up, their window of opportunity closes and those companies can no longer contact you.

If you’re interested in keeping control of your data while hearing from relevant brands when you are in the market for particular products and services – click here to sign up for a free account with ALLOW to see what we can do for you.

Kind Regards,

Justin
