Personal Data Ecosystem Consortium had a busy 12 months. Here we are at the end of the year, and we wanted to catch you up. This is Part I, a recap through the first half of 2011. PDEC people and Startup Circle companies are in bold.

PDEC Events, Publications and Speaking Activities

PDEC was founded in the late summer of 2010
Kaliya Hamlin and Phil Windley both wrote out principles for Personal Data and the new emerging consortium the same week without knowing it. You can read Phil Windley’s here, and Kaliya’s here. The website was launched by Kaliya Hamlin at Telco 2.0, October 27-28th 2010 in Los Angeles. It was a simple aggregate blog and a few pages about the emerging efforts.

Kaliya Hamlin was interviewed by Bain and Company for the project. She also participated actively in advisory group calls. She is listed along with other Startup Circle members who contributed their thinking on the inside cover of Personal Data: The Emergence of a New Asset Class that was published in February 2011.

NSTIC (National Strategy on Trusted Identities in Cyberspace) National Program Office Announcement
January 7th, 2011 — Stanford, Palo Alto, CA
Kaliya Hamlin and Mary Hodder attended the NSTIC National Program Office Announcement at Standford University. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and   Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and  White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt both spoke. Following this meeting, Kaliya wrote this article on her Fast Company Blog: National! Identity! Cyberspace! Why we shouldn’t freak out about NSTIC.

January 20, 2011
Kaliya Hamlin presented at the Digital Privacy Forum about the Personal Data Ecosystem. More. (This event was also recorded for C-SPAN.)

Department of Commerce Green Paper Response Due
January 28, 2011
Kaliya Hamlin and Mary Hodder submitted the PDEC Green Paper response to the DOC and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NIST) on the DOC proposals around identity and personal data, and the Do Not Track proposal by the FTC. Read it here.

Strata, Data Camp
February 1, 2011 – Santa Clara
Mary Hodder led a session at Data Camp, Strata for developers on the Personal Data Ecosystem.

Conversational Commerce Conference (C3)
February 2-3, 2011 – San Francisco
Mary Hodder spoke at the C3 Event, on a panel with Michael Becker, Dean Landsman, Prakash Kondepudi (of Intellius) and Julian Gay (Orange) on CRM, VRM and Personal Data. Kaliya Hamlin also attended.

FTC Do Not Track Event
February 9, 2011 – Berkeley, CA
Mary Hodder attended the FTC all day meeting on Do Not Track. Mary asked the only audience question of the day, about models other than DNT and business as usual: whether a Personal Data Ecosystem would create a market solution to solve user discontent with the current state of online tracking and user data.

Applied Brilliance Salon
February 17, 2011 — San Francisco
Mary Hodder attended the salon, regarding Personal Data topics, hosted by Jerry Michalski. Mary asked the first question about a Personal Data Ecosystem solution.

Federal Trade Commission – Paper Response Due
February 18, 2011
Mary Hodder and Kaliya Hamlin submitted the PDEC response to the FTC on Do Not Track proposal. Mary Hodder wrote answers to the enormous number of the questions they put forward in the white paper Read it here (PDF).

Personal Archiving Conference
February 24-25th, 2011 – San Francisco
Kaliya Hamlin attended the Personal Archiving Conference convened by Jeff Ubois at the Internet Archive. She connected to several efforts that touched on Personal Data storage.

SXSW
March 14, 2011 – Austin, TX
Kaliya Hamlin attended SXSW where she spoke on a panel with Heather Schlegel called “How we create identity.” Kaliya participated a VRM-Personal Data meetup convened by Doc Searls that included Tara Hunt from Buyosphsere, Mike Schwartz from Gluu, and Drummond Reed from Connect.me, among others.

Kaliya Hamlin participated in this as a mentor the morning of the event sharing her expertise with women who had ideas related to identity and personal data.

April 15, 2011 – Washington DC
Kaliya Hamlin attended this invitation-only event hosted at at the national offices of the Chamber of Commerce. She connect with industry leaders who’s work touches on different aspects of the strategy.

Tracking Do Not Track panel, Morris + King
April 26, 2011 – NYC
Mary Hodder spoke on a panel with Brian Morrisey of Digiday, David Norris of Blue Cava, Dan Jaffe of the National Association of Advertisers and Helen Nissenbaum of NYU. More.

W3C Privacy and Tracking
April 28-29, 2011 – Princeton, NJ
Kaliya Hamlin submitted the PDEC position paper (PDF) to the W3C Privacy and Tracking Event. Mary Hodder attended the W3C event about privacy and tracking. The event was primarily focused on Do Not Track as the only solution, but Mary asked as many questions as possible to open up thinking about a possible Personal Data Ecosystem approach.

Kaliya Hamlin co-facilitated this day that focused on questions of what happens to your data after you die. Several companies in this space have services similar to personal data stores and business models were discussed.

Personal Data 2.0
May 10-12, 2011 – London
Kaliya Hamlin facilitated the Personal Data 2.0 Day this was much smaller then the Palo Alto event. One of the sessions that Kaliya facilitated co-created a comprehensive ecosystem landscape with over a dozen industry experts and professionals that is still being refined and will be published soon.

Privacy, Identity and Innovation
May 19-20, 2011, Santa Clara
Many startups focused on personal data were at this event and we had the first PDEC Startup Circle gathering on the evening prior to the event. Attendees included Shane Green of Personal, Joe Andrieu of Switchbook, and Tara Hunt of Buyosphere. Kaliya Hamlin participated in a Roundtable Discussion, Implementing an Identity Ecosystem, with Declan McCullagh of CNET, Eric Sachs, Product Manager at Google, Ari Schwartz, Senior Internet Policy Advisor for the NIST Information Technology Laboratory, Don Thibeau, Executive Director of the OpenID Foundation, Peter Watkins, Executive director in the Office of the CIO with the Government of British Columbia. W3C Identity in the Browser Workshop
May 24th – Mountain View, CA
Mary Hodder presented the Personal Data Ecosystem philosophy. More can be found about the workshop here. Kaliya Hamlin submitted the PDEC position paper Empowering Individuals with Tools to Manage Their Personal Data (PDF).

Quantified Self
May 28, 2011, Mountain View, CA
Mary Hodder attended Quantified Self (QS) and led a session on Developing Health / QS Apps in a Personal Data Ecosystem model. More.

Federated Social Web Europe/International Summit
June 3-5 2011, Berlin
Kaliya Hamlin attended this summit, along with Markus Sabadelo and Henrik Biering. Markus and Henrik agreed to act as liaisons between the PDEC community and the Federated Social Web (FSW) efforts as FSW moves into the W3C.

Startup Circle launches concurrently with World Economic Forum meeting
June 7, 2011 – Vienna, Austria
PDEC announced the launch of the Startup Circle. Read our post to learn more about it. Kaliya Hamlin convened dinner with three startup circle members the evening before the WEF meeting in Veinna: Markus Sabadello from Project Danube, William Heath from Mydex, and Shane Green from Personal. Kaliya Hamlin was an active participant in the WEF Rethinking Personal Data meeting in Vienna.

NSTIC Governance Workshop
June 8-9, 2011 – Washington, DC
Kaliya Hamlin attended the NSTIC Governance Workshop, hosted to consider how the Identity Ecosystem should be governed and raised the issue that perhaps “Trust Framework” was not the best name to describe the joint technology & policy frameworks being developed to support the sharing of personally identifiable information and personal data online. Jeremy Grant, the head of the program office, asked her if she had a better name.

NSTIC Privacy Workshop
June 27, 2011 – Boston
Kaliya Hamlin was invited by NIST to present at the NSTIC Privacy Workshop (PDF) on a panel Privacy-Enhancing Technologies, Usability and the End User Experience. The Moderator was Dazza Greenwood, eCitizen Foundation and panelists included: Jeffrey Friedberg, Chief Trust Architect, Microsoft, Ken Mortenson, Chief Privacy Officer, CVS Caremark, John Clippinger, The Law Lab at Harvard, Seth Schoen, Staff Technologist, Electronic Foundation (EFF) and Dawn Jutla, Professor, Saint Mary’s University, Halifax. Following up on the comment at the earlier governance workshop Kaliya Hamlin proposed “Accountability Frameworks” as a better name for Trust Frameworks. This post outlines her reasoning for this new name.

While at the workshop both Jeremy Grant and Ari Schwartz, strongly encouraged to submit a response to the NSTIC Notice of Inquiry requesting input on how the Identity Ecosystem should be governed due a month from then.
