Value Network Mapping Begins

Last week Kaliya and Verna Alee traveled to the Cloud Identity Summit to get the Phase 1 of our first Industry Collaborative project started.

We are working on developing Value Network Maps of how value flows between different roles in the personal data ecosystem. We are starting with a map of how things work today and then considering how things change if people have personal data stores with data usage rights they manage and control.

Next Wednesday we are having a mapping session in San Francisco. We are inviting all those exploring options in this emerging industry to attend.

Current and Future Ecosystem for Personal Data

What is a Value Network Map?
Value Network Mapping defines the roles in a business ecosystem and maps the value flows, both implicit and explicit, between them. The map becomes is a shared visual and analytical tool that brings coherence and focus to industry conversations.

The work session will provide systems level insight about key questions such as:

• How does the personal data market really work today?
• What does the ecosystem of data services look like when people have personal data stores, banks and lockers?
• Where are the opportunities for influencing the ecosystem or providing new services and technologies?
• How can risk be minimized for participants in the ecosystem?

How does it work?
We will work collaboratively to refine roles such as: data broker, data aggregator, vendor, individual, transaction provider etc. We will then explore how value (money, information, data, etc) flows between these roles today and look at how the ecosystem map changes when we add in emerging roles such as personal data store providers.  You can see bellow a photo from early collaborative work from Phase 1 done this week at the Cloud Identity Summit.

What you will get out of the session:

• Only those who attend the session will receive a write up of all the materials generated during the session.
• Attendees will gain early access to the general Value Network Map generated in this phase of the project.
• Attendees and sponsors will be given a commercial reuse license of the general Value Network Map from Phase 1 of the Project.
• Learn the basics of this powerful analytical approach.
• An enriched cross industry dialogue focused on shaping the future of this ecosystem.

What is the output?
In late summer, 2011, PDEC will publicly publish the results of Phase 1: the general Value Network Map, put out under a creative commons, with attribution, non-commercial reuse license. Attendees and sponsors will be given a commercial reuse license.

What’s Next for the Project?

In Phase 2 of the project, the general Value Network Map will serve as the basis of Industry Specific Maps for how the ecosystem is activated in different industry scenarios. Industries we have sponsorship for include Finance and Media/Advertising. We are considering maps for Telecommunications, Data Aggregation, and Accountability Frameworks.  If you are interested in participating in this next Phase please contact us.

Verna Allee Founder, ValueNet Works and President, Verna Allee Associates
Verna Allee is an internationally recognized author, consultant, and speaker. She has more than twenty years of deep experience in value networks, intangibles, knowledge management, and new business models. Verna has been a trusted advisor to more than 100 Fortune 1000 companies, small businesses, government agencies, civil society organizations, and entrepreneurial startups. She is the author or editor of four books and more than fifty industry articles. Her previous industry analyses include regional innovation networks in Europe, global finance, and peace building.

Kaliya Hamlin, Founder and Executive Director, Personal Data Ecosystem Consortium
Kaliya Hamlin is an expert in user-centric identity and data sharing. She was dubbed Identity Woman early in her involvement in the sector and this continues to be the name of her blog and her Twitter handle. In 2009 Kaliya was named by Fast Company magazine as one of the most influential women in technology. She has a proven track record of catalyzing collaboration, convening more than twenty gatherings that are significant forums for development of standards such as Open IDv2, Information Cards, 0Authv1 and v2, Portable Contacts, the Salmon Protocol, XRD v1, XDI, and Webfinger.

Mary Hodder, Chair. Personal Data Ecosystem Consortium
Mary Hodder is a veteran Silicon Valley technologist, most recently founding Wellness Mobile, and prior to that as VP Products at Apispehre, a geolocation mobile company building an enterprise platform for mobile developers. At Apisphere she oversaw development of 12 mobile location products and the platform. She has worked with large and small organizations as Product Developer, Information Architect, and Interaction Designer. Her research includes a survey of current new media research. She has been on the board of mission-related organizations including Attention Trust and One Web Day.
